We’re back into the swing of things with the returning ladies of The Real Housewives of New York City. Sonja still has her house and her delusions. Luann is still going through with her engagement. Bethenny is finally divorced. But what about the new girl? We’ve still yet to meet Tinsley Mortimer. Let’s get our first impression in “It Girl, Interrupted.”
Sonja’s New Roomie
Sonja’s in her house, talking to herself in the mirror about how happy she is now that she’s dying her eyebrows when her friend, and new houseguest, Tinsley Mortimer arrives. She’s staying with Sonja for a bit while she looks for a new place to stay. She was once New York’s “it-girl” apparently. (Full disclosure, I never lived in New York so I have no idea who that person is. But now I will because I do, indeed know who Housewives are. So welcome to the family, Tinsley girl!)
Bethenny, who is dressed up like a cat for Halloween, entertains Ramona and Carole before she goes out. She has an awkward exchange with Ramona, who feels neglected by Bethenny now that the B has a BF. But she gets over it quick enough to start her normal round of gossip about Luann.
She tells the ladies about her tiff with Luann about the shower. She says she’s finally come to the conclusion that Luann is happy and ignorance is bliss. Now whether that means that she’s going to back off Luann or not, remains to be seen.
Luann and her daughter go hat shopping for Sonja’s upcoming Mad Hatter party (just one of the million reasons I love The Real Housewives). She complains about how she misses Sonja, but she’s really tired of her talking trash about her and Tom. Victoria wonders if Sonja is just jealous. (It’s always jealousy!)
Tinsley and Sonja have a morning pow-wow about the things Tinsley’s looking for in a man. She was married to a man named Topper (TOPPER!!) for 15 years but has been divorced for three. And her last relationship didn’t end well either. She ended up getting arrested for trespassing after she showed up on his property after they ended things. The most embarrassing thing for Tinsley? Her crazy mugshot of course! She didn’t even have her eyebrows done!
But now she’s looking to start over and Sonja wants to be supportive because she knows what it feels like to lose everything. And of course she has an arsenal of available men to set Tinsley up with. Minus Tom, of course.
Dorinda and Ramona meet for cryotherapy, only Ramona arrives dressed for a date because she has one right after the event. Only Dorinda will be getting her parts frozen today I guess. The two talk about Sonja and Dorinda expresses her displeasure. She doesn’t like that Sonja has been getting nasty about Dorinda in the press and around town. It’s not a matter of if she’s going to handle it, but how and when.
Tinsley talks about how much she’s missed New York. She also talks about how she gets asked all the time what it takes to be an “it girl.” (Yuck.) She also doesn’t have any events to go to because she’s just arrived back in NY, but she’s going to get designer gowns anyway. Just in case.
Later, Bethenny talks about her new boyfriend Dennis. Although she cares about him and is enjoying their relationship, things are complicated because of her daughter and her ex. It’s hard to fully immerse in someone else’s world when there’s so much else going on to worry about.
Mad as a Hatter
It’s the day of Sonja’s Mad Hatter party and Ramona arrives early. And while she’s settling in the garden, Sonja and her borrowed butler talk smack about her. How rude! I mean, we all know Ramona is rude, but the butler says she deserved to be cheated on by her husband which is below the belt.
Ramona tells Carole a complicated story about her planned trip to the Hamptons in the garden. Apparently she invited both Sonja and Dorinda to stay with her the same weekend, but Dorinda refused to stay with Sonja because the two are fighting. Ramona was hoping Dorinda would be at the party today so the two of them could patch things up and both stay with her, but now she’ll have to dis-invite Sonja. And Sonja doesn’t take too kindly to dis-invitations. It’s why she’s still mad at Dorinda for not inviting her to the Berkshires!
Bethenny pokes fun at Sonja’s tea party. And she’s dismayed to find out that she’s the only one who followed the dress code of “colorful” on the invitation. But Lu shows up in full “Mad Hatter” regalia including a floral print dress and a garden hat.
Things are still a little weird between Luann and Bethenny. They’re nice enough to each other, but there’s clearly still tension there.
Ramona tries to get to know Tinsley by asking way too personal questions for a first meeting. Tinsley takes it in stride though, using her Southern charm to win Ramona over. She also talks openly about her arrest, which she’s embarrassed about in her confessional, but also glad to get it out in the open. Ramona tells her she always thinks there are positive things that come from negative things and they cheer to that.
The ladies do have a laugh when Tinsley tells them that Sonja is trying to help her find a husband. Carole says this might not exactly be Sonja’s area of expertise.
Luann and Sonja try to sit down and work out their differences. Luann asks Sonja to stop trashing her and Dorinda in the press. Sonja maintains that she’s just looking out for Lu. And round-and-round we go again. In the end, Sonja knows Lu is only hearing what she wants to hear, but she’s not going to stop shooting her straight just because it makes her uncomfortable. She has to do what she has to do to be a good friend.
