DC’s Suicide Squad is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, with expectations being that it could possibly even scale the same box office heights as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to become one of the biggest comic book movies of 2016. Of course, if the film doesn’t do well critically and/or commercially, then it could be a painful blow to the DC Extended Universe.

Fortunately, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad comprises of a host of big names, such as Will Smith, Jared Leto, Ben Affleck, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and of course Margot Robbie. The latter is quickly rising to the Hollywood A-list and she’s playing the character in Ayer’s film who has easily gotten the most publicity so far: Harley Quinn.

With the in-demand Robbie a popular choice for men and women alike, her interviews and coverage sometimes extends beyond a straight-forward questions and answers session, followed by a photoshoot. For this month’s Vogue, Robbie’s opted for something a little different. As well as the usual coverage that also promotes the film, she appears in a short movie that pokes fun at the 2000 film American Psycho, starring Christian Bale.

In the slick, three-minute video (see above), Robbie tiptoes round a clean, somewhat sterile “charming little five-bedroom in Beechwood Canyon,” as her narration reveals. But as it goes on, the tone remains in the vein of Patrick Bateman’s hypnotizing intro to the Bale-fronted movie, which is great in itself, but hints at parody when she utters phrases such as “I like to meditate as I work on my core, even though I was born with a six-pack,” and “I can’t remember the last time I washed my hair – it basically cleans itself now.”

Dubbed ‘Australian Psycho’, the video suddenly cuts to an upbeat ending after recreating that haunting face mask removal scene, whereby Robbie snaps out of this murderer persona and begins speaking in her native Australian accent as the magazine’s then advertised. It’s a nicely shot and edited short film that playfully reminds us of not only how great American Psycho is, but that Robbie, contrary to a lot of big stars today, doesn’t take herself too seriously (see also her self-aware cameo in The Big Short last year, for further case in point).

Obviously this notion of her being a deranged killer is to tie in with her appearance in the DC film that sees the famous Harley Quinn team with the likes of Deadshot, Enchantress, Captain Boomerang, led by Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag. In truth, it’s a pretty inventive tie-in to the character she plays in the movie, as it portrays the actual person Margot Robbie as a Bateman-style psycho, which could also be a wink to the crazy method acting reports that have surfaced from the production – notably co-star Jared Leto (The Joker) having sent her anal beads and used condoms (among other things), in order to ‘get into character.’

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is now playing in U.S. theaters. Suicide Squad will arrive on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017The Flash on March 16, 2018Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018Shazam on April 5, 2019Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
