Yesterday, CBS released a lot of information regarding its 2016-2017 TV season. This included information on shows that will air during primetime on the regular network, but also shows that will be heading to CBS’ streaming service CBS All Access in 2017. We just got the first look at the new Star Trek series, but we also got confirmation that The Good Wife spinoff will be heading to the network in the spring of 2017.

Early rumblings about the series led us to believe the drama would follow Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), and that is going to hold true. We now know more about the new drama, however. The new show is going to pick up exactly a year after the events in The Good Wife finale, which left us with Alicia severing her friendship with Diane—seemingly for good—in a bid to save Peter from jail time. In the finale, Alicia revealed an affair between Diane’s husband and another woman and later in the episode Diane shockingly slapped her.

I’m assuming that in order to pick up with Diane and Lucca, some mention will have to be made about what happened with Diane to bring her into a different social and (presumably) job circle. New characters are going to be introduced, so it seems as if it will be a pretty different world. Unfortunately, the new series doesn’t have a name, yet, which means we’re sticking with Good Wife spinoff for now.

As noted in previous coverage, The Good Wife showrunners Michelle and Robert King are expected to co-create and executive produce the project. However, both of the Kings are currently working on CBS’ new summer drama  BrainDead and will not be involved as much with the spinoff.  CBS revealed in a release that the day-to-day work will be handed over to Phil Alden Robinson, who will act as showrunner. Ridley Scott, David Zucker, Liz Glotzer and Brooke Kennedy will all executive produce, as well.

Unlike the new Star Trek series, which will air its first episode on CBS before heading to its permanent All Access home, it doesn’t look as if CBS will be giving fans a taste of The Good Wife spinoff ahead of time. If you’d like to find out what Diane has been up to, you’ll have to pay the $5.99 fee for All Access when the show is airing.

We aren’t getting the series on CBS All Access until next spring, but we’ll keep you updated as other actors and actresses sign on for the new streaming series. In the meantime, CBS has a large slate of programming hitting the schedule this summer and way more stuff coming in the fall. You can see what CBS has coming up this summer with our TV premiere schedule, and this fall with our CBS fall schedule
