As Bill King pointed out in his recap of the third round of auditions for season 11, America’s Got Talent used to be a very singer-friendly show. Yet when Howard Stern came on board, the competition switched to focusing more and more on the variety acts and it paid off. Some of the biggest success stories to come out of America’s Got Talent have been the variety and novelty acts. It’s been the magicians, ventriloquists and dancing dogs that have been the biggest winners of America’s Got Talent, not the singers.
Yet in season 11, the show has swung back to its roots and basically become indistinguishable from the gluttony of other singing reality shows. The biggest symptom of this issue has been the Golden Buzzer. Three Golden Buzzers have been used in America’s Got Talent season 11 and they have all been on singers. It needs to stop, sooner rather than later.
