Director Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice features guest-starring appearances by multiple DC superheroes who will be starring in their own solo DC Extended Universe films over the forthcoming years – including, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), whose solo movie will hit theaters in 2017. Meanwhile, after they appear in Snyder’s Justice League Part One in November of next year, both Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash will be headlining their own solo DCEU films in 2018.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the author/screenwriter of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, was previously set to direct the DCEU Flash solo movie from his own script, but ended up dropping out as director over creative differences. Grahame-Smith’s Flash screenplay, which is based on a treatment written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), will presumably be undergoing some revisions, now that a new director has boarded the project.

Deadline is reporting that Rick Famuyiwa is now set to direct The Flash for its March 2018 release date. The writer/director of the acclaimed 2015 indie film Dope and, most recently, the HBO TV movie docudrama Confirmation has a vision for The Flash movie (as Deadline‘s report puts it) “that would resonate with young viewers” and is “very compatible with the script” currently in place for this movie. Famiyuwa will likely end up re-working the most recent Flash script draft himself, seeing as he’s had a hand in writing most of his directorial efforts to date (see also: The Wood, Brown Sugar).

Dope cast members Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, and Shameik Moore

The Flash will be Famuyiwa’s first time playing in the sandbox of big-budget tentpoles – but then again, that was also going to be the situation with Grahame-Smith, who has far less directorial experience in general than Famuyiwa does. Moreover, the latter’s work on Dope – a quirky and genre-bending movie about three nerdy teenaged friends who get caught up in a wild adventure that involves dangerous drug dealers in Southern California – in particular suggests he’s a promising selections to deliver a fun and creative Barry Allen adventure on the big screen that also has enough edge to feel at home in the larger DCEU (while also standing apart from its CW TV counterpart).

Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
