Bloodline star Sissy Spacek delves into why her character, Sally, was so unaware of Danny’s (Ben Mendelsohn) family.
In season 2 of Bloodline, Sally eventually learns that Danny had a son, Nolan (Owen Teague). Things become even more uncomfortable for Sally when the boy’s mother, Evangeline (Andrea Riseborough) shows up at the Rayburn inn, essentially demanding money from Sally like the arrangement she had with Robert (Sam Shepard).
Spacek recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about Sally’s ignorance about Nolan and how it dates back to how she raised Danny.
“Sally had Danny at a very young age,” Spacek said. “She was married to someone who was a number of years older than she was and had been in the military and she was kind of a flower child and she got pregnant and had this baby really before she was – I think she has real misgivings about her parenting skills and the way she raised Danny and the way things were with Danny. I think she didn’t think Danny was responsible to be a father and so she didn’t want the baby to be born. And she thought it hadn’t been born. It’s very complicated.”
As Spacek explained, the Rayburn children grew up in the inn, a place where an amount of professionalism and poise was expected.
“They had to behave in a certain way and they had to put on a certain professional face,” she said. “So all of the things that happened in their personal life, you think they buried it, they pushed it under the rug, they didn’t deal with it because they’re in the service industry and the thought was, ‘You can’t air your dirty laundry. You have to [act as if] everything is just fine,’ but then at home behind closed doors they’re dealing with all the things that happen to human beings in life. She’s just trying to run the inn and grieve her family losses and put one foot in front of the other and carry on.”
Bloodline is available to stream on Netflix.
