This episode of The Real Housewives of Potomac, titled “Hold Your Horses,” finds the majority of the girls donning huge hats and full cups at the Preakness. Monique takes a bite out of some southern cooking as she takes a trip to Alabama to see her husband get inducted into the state hall of fame.
Preakness, Party of 5
Gizelle and Robyn meet to get their nails done, and Robyn decides to plan a girls’ outing to the Preakness, bringing all the girls together, except Monique, which is fine with Gizelle, who doesn’t miss the opportunity to judge the new girl. While the top coat dries, Robyn confronts Gizelle about the fact that the latter feels like the former is backstabbing her while she isn’t around.
All the girls show up to the Preakness as a means of rubbing elbows with the who’s who of the upper crust of Potomac. Ashely takes this time to look down her nose at Robyn’s unconventional divorce with her husband, Juan. Gizelle and Karen roll up, one with a veil and one with a hat three times the size of her head, and start inquiring about Ashley’s sex life with her geriatric husband now that the restaurant is up and running.
With Monique out of picture down in Alabama, the girls all take the time to cast strong judgments on Monique, with Gizelle being the most vocal and blatantly envious. Charisse shows up last, very late and with another massive hat in tow. And no sooner does she sit down than Gizelle makes herself the center of attention again, telling everyone about her new man. They somehow latch on to a rich racetrack sugar daddy who makes it rain in a bet for all the women, winning $3,000 before the sun sets.
After the girls go to the races, Robyn pampers herself a little more, leaving Juan home alone with the kids while she gets a nice blowout by her hairstylist. This leads to a nice therapy session with her stylist, with Robyn lamenting about the state of her divorce and their lasting love and family despite the legal separation. Meanwhile, Ashley and her husband, for some bizarre reason, try to satiate their adrenaline fix with indoor skydiving, which no doubt prompts the attendees to pray for Michael’s heart to make it through the flips and spins through the air. It seems as if Ashley and Michael have more marital problems than initially let on because when reflecting on their conversation after the indoor skydiving, Ashley gets emotional wondering if she and her husband can get back to their better days.
The episode starts with a sneak peek into Monique’s life, with a view into her home as she prepares for her husband to be inducted into the Alabama Football Hall of Fame. She informs the audience of the fact that she and her mother-in-law have quite the strenuous relationship. She tells this over some wine to an old girlfriend who she used to rap with and, one by one, gives evaluations of all the girls.
After landing, Monique is mentally preparing to spar with her husband’s mother, looking to God Almighty for some help in her endeavors. Once at the hall of fame induction, it doesn’t take long for Monique and her mother-in-law to start side-eyeing each other every chance they have, trading blows over Monique’s children. Over dinner, in which Miss Shirley vocalizes the fact that she isn’t paying, she throws constant and savage shade to Monique over her lack of employment. In no time at all, the dinner becomes a commentary on Monique’s marriage, which seems quite strong but, to her mother-in-law, seems weak due to her lack of hands-on involvement in it. It ends with some raised voices, Monique defending her marriage and Miss Shirley doubling down on the criticisms, all while sharing some mac and cheese and French fries down in sweet home Alabama.
