Following the premiere of the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a bunch of new details poured onto the web thanks to interviews with director Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill and John Boyega. Some of them demanded their own post where we could dissect them, while others are just interesting details that fans who are hungry to know everything they can about The Last Jedi will be happy to hear. So let’s sort through this round-up of additional Star Wars The Last Jedi details, shall we?
Since we previously learned that Star Wars: The Last Jedi begins immediately after the end of The Force Awakens, fans have been wondering exactly what the traditional opening crawl of the movie will tell us that we didn’t already know. Rey is on Ahch-To giving Luke Skywalker his original lightsaber, Finn is still down for the count, and the First Order suffered a crushing defeat after Starkiller Base was destroyed, leaving Kylo Ren and General Hux to flee to wherever Supreme Leader Snoke is hiding.
But in a recent interview with MTV, Rian Johnson insists that the opening crawl will still fill the usual three paragraphs worth of text. He explained, “Even if it picks up right where the last one left off, there’s still a lot of unanswered questions about what the state of everything is.” That makes sense since we don’t know much about what the First Order’s plans are now that their latest planetary weapon has been destroyed.
During the Star Wars: The Last Jedi panel, Johnson mentioned that the galaxy is in chaos after they destroyed the New Republic, so that will likely be addressed for general audiences who otherwise wouldn’t know that. More than anything, the crawl will probably set up what’s going to happen next as opposed to filling in the gaps of what happened between movies.
Since we only saw one shot of John Boyega as Finn in the teaser trailer for The Last Jedi, and he was passed out in some kind of medical pod, fans are wondering just how much action the former Stormtrooper will get. Thankfully, Fandango caught up with Boyega and he revealed that he definitely gets physical in the sequel, and there’s a new mission for him:
“Yeah very physical, very physical. He’s on a new mission, there’s a new goal now. The Resistance is under immense pressure. The First Order is back and badder than ever, and it requires Finn to make a choice as to what side he’s on.”
That last part makes it sound like there’s a chance Finn may turn back to the First Order, but during The Last Jedi panel he was a little more clear by saying he has to determine if he’s going to keep fighting with the Resistance or just run from the First Order. No matter what, Finn is going to see plenty of new action as Boyega says, “Finn has some combat in this one, and it’s going to be really interesting, people are going to love it.”
As for Finn’s new mission, if you’ve been following rumors about The Last Jedi closely, then you already know at least some of what Finn’s new mission entails. We won’t recap it here just to keep potential spoilers to a minimum, but you can find out more elsewhere if you’re curious.
During the Last Jedi panel, we were introduced to Kelly Marie Tran’s new character Rose, a maintenance worker for the Resistance. That’s pretty much all we learned about the character, but in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, John Boyega revealed a bit more about Rose, mostly that she’s a big fan of Finn. First, he explains:
“Finn’s a big deal. Hes a big deal in the Resistance now. I mean, you’ve got to think about it, between VII and VIII, people have now heard about all the amazing things that he has done. And now he’s, like, waving and saying hi to all the resistance ladies around.”
It seems one of those ladies will be Rose, as Boyega follows up to reveal:
“Kelly’s character is an absolute fan of Finn. She’s so interested. It takes an interesting turn though as they get closer. The dynamic between them is very interesting. Finn sees a lot of himself in her, and she’s still trying to figure out her place. She’s not a soldier. She’s not a pilot. She’s trying to figure out what can she impart that’s important to the good fight. And so they both have to figure that out together.”
Could them getting closer include a romance? That might bum some people out who have been looking forward to Poe Dameron and Finn having a bromance that turns into a real romance, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
For those who paid close attention to the the Last Jedi teaser trailer, or checked out our extensive trailer breakdown, you might have noticed the presence of what appear to be AT-AT walkers on the horizon in the distance during the sequence where a swarm of new ships are seen skimming the ground of the new planet Crait, kicking up red dust from the surface. Johnson confirmed to Fandango the vehicles prominently featured in The Empire Strikes Back will indeed be back:
“Yeah, you liked the glimpse of that? Maybe you can zoom in real close and get a better look.”
Interestingly enough, if you do take a closer look, it appears that in addition to AT-AT walkers, we might also see new AT-STs as well. We knew that the First Order had upgraded AT-ATs since they can be glimpsed among the artillery during General Hux’s address of the troops in The Force Awakens, but this is the first time we’ll (presumably) see upgrade AT-STs as well.
Fandango caught up with Daisy Ridley briefly after the Last Jedi panel at Star Wars Celebration, and he asked whether she’s spoken with anybody who has seen a rough cut of the movie yet. She responded:
“I’ve spoken to a number of people that have seen a rough cut [of The Last Jedi], and everyone’s like ‘It’s different, it’s different.’ With Rian’s vision and his image – and also I think he [J.J.] brought the old fans back and the new fans in, and he had all this stuff – Rian had more room to kind of do his thing.”
While some fans might be worried that hearing people say “it’s different” means it doesn’t feel like a Star Wars movie, Daisy makes it sounds like the feeling is merely a departure from the more nostalgic approach that J.J. Abrams took with The Force Awakens. With a creative filmmaker like Rian Johnson on board, that’s exactly what most fans are hoping for, I think.
There will be plenty more revelations about The Last Jedi in the coming months, so stay tuned.
