You do not have to follow the DC hype train for too long before you see the rumors surrounding Armie Hammer taking on the role of Green Lantern. It’s a scenario that has been consistently thrown around online since we learned that Ryan Reynolds would not return to the role of Hal Jordan, and Hammer himself has fueled the speculation by constantly trolling fans online and hinting that he may don a Power Ring for Green Lantern Corps. It was fun at first, but now Armie Hammer seems concerned that DC fans are about to turn on him. The actor explained:
Man, jeez… It was fun for a while and now I’m convinced that everyone’s gonna turn on me so I’m like ‘Oh shit, slowly backing away.’
Based on Armie Hammer’s recent remarks to Collider while promoting the upcoming release of Free Fire, it sounds like the whole Green Lantern casting situation has gotten slightly out of hand. The only real potential casting information that relates him to the role of Hal Jordan has come from social media, and no actual casting talks have taken place between him and Warner Bros. The problem with this situation is that many fans have already taken the possibility of him portraying the Emerald Knight very seriously, and things have started to escalate beyond a level of comfort.
That said, I would be remiss for not pointing out how perfect Armie Hammer is for the role of Hal Jordan. Look at the guy; he’s a dead ringer for the most iconic Green Lantern of all time.
Aside from the obvious physical similarities, Hal Jordan is a character who lines up very neatly with many of the roles that Armie Hammer has taken on over the years. He is cocky, he’s a hot shot, and he has a fantastic sense of humor. Despite his obvious talents as an actor, Hammer has yet to find a real “signature” role, which subsequently makes the prospect of him portraying Hal Jordan on the silver screen even more enticing.
There’s ample precedent for comic book fans getting what they want from major movie studios — just look at Ryan Reynolds‘ ability to return to the role of Deadpool after his failed attempt at Jal Jordan. So while no talks have taken place between Hammer and WB, let’s keep our fingers crossed that they start taking him more seriously as a contender for the role.
