Just look at the Instagram feed of Hilary Duff and you can tell she’s one of Hollywood’s most hands-on mothers. She’s frequently photographed playing with her 4-year-old son, Luca, in the park, carrying him around to run errands, and all sorts of fun stuff. The Younger actress truly seems to adore motherhood, and it’s fun to follow her journey with Luca on social media.
But one of Duff’s latest Instagram posts has a few Internet trolls up in arms. Before I go any further, let me explain this: Duff didn’t do anything wrong. Today’s dose of drama is the result of Twitter leeches who need to get their minds out of the gutter. Capisce?
Perfect. Now, on to the issue at hand: Duff and Luca recently went on a trip to Disneyland, and the Lizzie McGuire icon uploaded a photo to Instagram of herself kissing Luca. The caption of the photo reads, “Happiest happiest happiest happiest happiest happiest happiest happiest place on earth! We love you @disneyland,” followed by a stream of “heart” and “praise hands” emojis. It’s fun. It’s sweet. It’s innocuous. See the photo for yourself, below:
A few people see this image differently, though. They’ve taken this innocent exchange between mother and son and turned it into something gross and wrong—even though that’s clearly not what’s happening in the photo. Here are just a few of the awful responses we found on Twitter:
The Instagram hate was just as swift, with people calling the picture “inappropriate” and “disgusting.”
Duff clearly caught wind of the criticism because she later took to Twitter herself and told people to back off.
“…go ahead and click a quick ‘unfollow’ with your warped minds and judgment,” Duff wrote. See the full message in the tweet, below:
She’s right. There is nothing wrong or deviant about this affection. It’s just a mother’s love for her son. And that’s beautiful. So, leave Hilary Duff alone on this one, please.
