Nobody was quite sure what to expect from the first Star Wars movie that didn’t quite fit into the rest of the story. However, now we have a bit of an idea what’s going to happen when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits screens on Friday. It could be huge. Projections are looking at the movie doing $300 million in business around the world in its opening weekend.

In addition to the movie opening in North America on Friday, it’s also hitting several foreign territories at the same time. The current projection, according to the Los Angeles Times, is that the film will do about $150 million domestically, combined with it doing about the same throughout all other areas combined. Needless to say, if Rogue One: A Star Wars Story puts up these sorts of opening numbers then Disney and Lucasfilm can officially call the standalone Star Wars movie experiment a success.

While the Star Wars brand is certainly good for a few million bucks at the box office, nobody has been quite sure what to make of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With it being the first movie of its kind within the franchise, telling a separate, if related, story, nobody seemed quite sure just how the audience would take to it. Would people still be interested if there was no hero named Skywalker? It appears they’ll take to it just fine.

One thing that might be helping is the near universal praise the film is receiving. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story currently sits at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own review gave the film a near perfect score. While reviews rarely impact box office attendance in general, they might push people who were on the fence about when to see it more toward sooner rather than later.

$300 million is also good news for Disney as they continue their absolute domination of the box office. They have their eyes on the all-time global box office crown and while $300 million won’t quite get them there, it will put them within striking distance with only a couple of weeks left in the year. With Rogue One joining a still strong Moana and a still solid Doctor Strange, the three movies working together through the end of the year may be enough to give Disney the record.

Of course, even if Rogue One: A Star Wars Story exceeds the $300 million projection the movie will still sit a far distance behind last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens which put up over $500 million globally on its opening weekend. Nobody has really expected Rogue One, to outdo those numbers. The Force Awakens is the third highest-grossing movie in the history of the industry. Rogue One is set to do well, but not that well.

Will you be one of the people checking out Rogue One on opening weekend? Let us know in the comments below.
