“Do you know who killed JonBenet Ramsey?”

Casting JonBenet is looking for its star.

Netflix has released the first clip of what is being billed as a documentary hybrid on the macabre fascination that still surrounds the infamous murder case of child beauty pageant queen JonBenet Ramsey.

In the eerie first look, eight lookalikes are shown waiting for their turn to audition to play the 6-year-old Ramsay, who was brutally killed inside her family’s Colorado home on Dec. 25, 1996. The case remains unsolved — and has sparked multiple true-crime offerings of late — since it gripped the nation more than 20 years ago.

“Do you know who killed JonBenet Ramsey?” one of the young girls, named Hannah, asks the person behind the camera after she introduces herself and prepares to audition.

Directed by Kitty Green, Casting JonBenet will have its world premiere in the Documentary Competition on Jan. 22 at the Sundance Film Festival, marking the first time a nonfiction work from Netflix will compete and the first acquisition of the Park City, Utah-based fest

For Casting JonBenet, which centers on the sensationalized murder case, filmmakers traveled to Ramsey’s hometown of Boulder, Co., to ask residents to reflect on their personal experiences with the trial and the strange mythology that continues to surround the tragedy, through reflections and even performances. The film examines how this crime shaped the attitudes and behavior of successive generations of local parents and children.

Green also produced the doc, along with Scott Macaulay and James Schamus. Meridian Entertainment financed the feature through its production pact with Schamus’ Symbolic Exchange.

The film launches globally on Netflix and in limited theatrical release April 2017.
