The beauty of a cinematic universe lies in the ability to bring mismatched characters together. With all sorts of permutations available, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a hotbed for reliable buddy movie dynamics and ridiculous action match-ups. That said, one character who has yet to find a kindred spirit in the MCU is Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer, but the actor seems to think that Tony Stark would be a perfect fit for Drax. Bautista recently opened up while promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and explained:
I’ve said for years, and years, and years. It’s Robert Downey Jr./Tony Stark, man. I think there’s so much humor to be had there with Drax and Tony Stark. With him being such a sarcastic bastard and Drax taking everything so literally. I think there’s tons of humor to be had there. I’m also a huge fan of Robert’s.
You can take our money right now, Marvel, because that sounds like an idea that’s almost too good to be true. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Dave Bautista made it clear that he wants to have some substantial time with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark when Infinity War debuts. It’s not necessarily hard to understand why this would work so well. Every other word that comes out of Iron Man’s mouth is a sarcastic dig or a pun; Drax would struggle to keep up every step of the way. Beyond that, the matchup of a guy who wears a full suit of armor and a man who doesn’t even wear a shirt running into battle together would present an excellent contrast regarding their fighting styles. With James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) out of the picture as an active combatant after the events in Civil War, Tony will need a new buddy; why not Drax?
Even if Drax and Tony Stark do not get much screen time together when Infinity War rolls around, there’s still precedent for them to share stories together going into Marvel’s Phase 4 slate — if they both survive Phase 3, that is. Iron Man has signed on as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy before, so it’s not necessarily outside the realm of possibility that the MCU could see Mr. Stark leave Earth to battle more cosmic threats in the near future.
That said, we shouldn’t look too far into the future because there’s no way of knowing what will happen during the events of Infinity War. Captain America actor Chris Evans recently suggested that Robert Downey Jr. is closer to quitting his role of Iron Man than most of us probably realized, and if that’s true, there’s no telling how much longer he will stick around. If we get at least one scene between him and Drax, his leaving should all be OK, however.
For now, we have our sights set on Drax’s next adventure before he gets the chance to meet Tony Stark. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will debut in theaters on May 5, and The Avengers: Infinity War will premiere next year on May 4, 2018.
