They’ve been on-and-off-again for six seasons on Scandal, so it was only a matter of time before Olivia and Fitz found themselves together again. I guess it takes people threatening Olivia’s life, and the country for that matter, to drive them back together. Fitz and Olivia are a power couple, and with Fitz out of the Oval soon, perhaps now that they are back together at least for a little while, they can finally move to Vermont and make jam.
Fitz Has Never Really Let Go
Ever since Olivia has been on his campaign trail, Fitz has been infatuated with her. Over the years, he has risked his marriage and his reputation to be with her. And when they are together, they are great. And even when they aren’t together, Olivia has a hold over Fitz. And even with all of his other girlfriends and indiscretions over the years, Fitz has never really been in love, or as much in love, as he is with Olivia. Even in season 6, when they are not together at all, in fact, he’s with the FBI director, he is telling Abby to search for places to build his library in Vermont. And we all know why.
Let’s Face It, Olivia Hasn’t Either
She ran away with Jake to a private island. She even got engaged to Edison. But at the end of the day, she always runs back to Fitz. He’s always on her mind, even when she doesn’t want him to be. As much as she has a hold over him, he has a hold over her. We could see the love and spark still there in the hospital after she and Jake found Huck. The way he ran to the hospital to be by her side. The way she melted into his arms and allowed him to comfort her.
Even though we see that Olivia needs to be with Fitz, it’s not so clear to her. She has worked so hard to be a gladiator and is really, really good at it. She’s made it clear she doesn’t want a man in her life to protect her. Not Fitz. Not Jake. Not Papa Pope. So when she got pregnant, it was her first instinct to abort it and not tell Fitz, as she didn’t want anything to deter her or his career. It is this decision, I fear, that could eventually hurt their reunion, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
They Belong Together
As we saw from the 100th episode, “The Decision,” even if Fitz never became president, the couple would be together. In fact, they would have gotten married! And even with the struggles in their marriage, they power through them to keep their relationship strong.
So, it’s only natural that they have always gravitated toward each other over the years. As long as they both remain in DC, they will continue to run into each other and be a part of each other’s lives, specifically since Olivia still has a grip on the White House.
Even Mellie agrees they should be together. After her initial heartbreak, she set aside her differences and hired Olivia to run her presidential campaign. And that’s a huge thing for Mellie, given her past with Olivia. In addition, they have a lot of secrets and dirt on each other. They cleaned up each other’s messes. And now, they are in one huge pickle that will require each of them to set aside their past and their differences with everyone in the group — including Papa Pope.
But Will They Make It?
Fitz shocked all of us, including Olivia, in “saving” Papa Pope from this new group. But will their love survive what is bound to be a messy situation? I think it has to at this point. Because, as I said, I definitely want to see Fitz and Olivia move to Vermont and make jam.
