Grimes has spoken out about “numerous” male record producers who have tried to cajole her into sex.

“I’ve been in numerous situations where male producers would literally be like ‘We won’t finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room’,” she told Rolling Stone.

She added: “If I was younger or in a more financially desperate situation, maybe I would have done that. I don’t think there are few female producers because women aren’t interested. It’s difficult for women to get in. It’s a pretty hostile environment.”

The Canadian, whose real name is Claire Boucher, was asked to comment on Ke$ha’s failed lawsuit against her producer Dr Luke, who she alleges sexually and emotionally abused her. A judge in New York recently dismissed her claims and refused to let the pop star out of her contract with Sony, prompting a huge reaction from other female artists in support of her.

Female artists are beginning to speak up against the sexism they’ve encountered in the music industry, with All Saints admitting recently that they suffered considerable discrimination in their late 90s heyday – including when producers on BBC music show Top of the Pops tried to film them naked.

Grimes also told interviewers that she was “halfway done with another record”. She said: “I’m not committing to anything, but I have a bunch of B sides I kind of want to finish. Plus, I’ve been making a bit of new music”.
