The original cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice was nearly four hours long, the film’s editor has revealed.

The version of Zack Snyder’s superhero mash-up movie now playing in cinemas runs to around two and a half hours, while an extended R-rated version set for home release later this year will add another half an hour of additional footage.

However, at one point the Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill-led blockbuster was even more drawn out. “Batman v Superman was a unique challenge in that we had not one but two protagonists, each with an alter-ego,” editor David Brenner explained in an interview with Pro Video Coalition.

“It was a lot to juggle, so the plot lines of a couple characters had to go,” he added. “These people are currently in the movie but we don’t track them, and it’s okay. What’s kind of fun is that we went back and did an extended cut where we put a lot of this stuff back, and we refined it into the same rhythm as the theatrical release.

“So what was once a nearly four hour cut with absolutely everything was ridiculous – ended up being about a three hour cut, once all these added storylines were refined with the fat was cut out.”

Despite disappointing reviews and a hefty drop in takings after its opening weekend, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has now raked in over $800 million (£560 million) at the box office worldwide. Earlier this week Warner Bros. confirmed long-running rumours that Ben Affleck is to star in a stand-alone Batman film.
