There are only three more hours left of American Idol. Before crowning the final champion, we still have to eliminate someone and find out who’s in the Top 2. Season 14 saw an all-boys finale. Will the same happen this year with Trent Harmon and Dalton Rapattoni? Or will La’Porsha Renae advance to the finals with either Trent or Dalton? Let’s make our penultimate prediction for the season.
After Trent performed “Chandelier,” he not only guaranteed himself a spot in the Top 2 but may have just won season 15. La’Porsha’s still in the running, so we obviously can’t count her out just yet. But let’s face it, Trent will be competing for the title. I don’t see any way that he’s eliminated. Trent started his rise at just the right time, about two to three weeks before the finale.
In the most recent episode, Top 3 Week, Trent came out during the Hometown Tribute round and wasn’t as good as he normally is. I noticed some pitch issues. And I don’t think his Justin Timberlake cover, Scott Borchetta’s Choice, will be considered one of his best performances, though there were some moments I really liked that allowed Trent to show off different sides to him. Then he ended the night on a high note with “Waiting Game” — that was a fantastic performance, with some amazing falsettos. That was the final performance in everyone’s minds as the episode ended. That, along with his recent rise up the ranks, will assure him a spot in the Top 2.
La’Porsha has been the frontrunner pretty much the entire season. (The only person standing in her way is Trent.) After not standing out as much during the Top 4, she came back during Top 3 Week and killed it. “Glory” won Round 1. And even though she didn’t agree with the message of “Stay with Me,” that didn’t stop her from delivering another spectacular performance; I was completely drawn in the entire time. She ended her set with Adele’s “Hello,” which had a couple moments that were hard for her to transition from her low- to mid-range, but still, overall I heard some great vocals. And seeing La’Porsha with her adorable baby afterwards, let’s face it, that’ll get her some votes as well.
La’Porsha most certainly deserves to be in the Top 2. She has had more standout performances than probably anybody else this season. And having a La’Porsha/Trent finale would be epic, regardless of the outcome.
As for Dalton, he just can’t compare vocally to La’Porsha or Trent. He had a forgettable Round 1 performance. He had fun with “Dancing in the Dark,” though I wasn’t really sure what to think of it at first. And his closer was a big disappointment: he lowered the key on “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” which really hurt him since he didn’t do too well with his lower notes. That was not worthy of advancing to the Top 2.
Dalton Rapattoni: This should be an easy elimination. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll have a La’Porsha/Trent finale, with Dalton going home in third place. Back during the semifinals, Dalton broke out as one of the frontrunners but quickly fell back as others like La’Porsha and Trent clobbered everyone. With the right songs, Dalton could do well in his genre. But he’s not good enough to deserve a Top 2 spot. So I am predicting that Dalton will be leaving the competition just one episode short of the finale.
Who do you predict will be in the Top 2? Is it an obvious choice? Or will there be a shocker? Vote in the poll below and share your predictions in the comments section.
