Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are not afraid of feminism, sex, politics, or potty humor—or putting their friendship above everything else (which is why we love them).

Jason Bell

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer were in the throes of writing the third season of Broad City, the Comedy Central show they created, produce, and star in, when they got this idea in their heads that one of their characters should work for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Which led them to think the presidential candidate should be on the show. Which led them to realize that that would probably never happen. “We were like, ‘You know, we’ll just write this. Hillary doesn’t need to be involved,’ ” says Jacobson. “And then we were like, ‘Maybe we should just see if she would do it.’ When she said yes, we were like, ‘Holy sh-t!’ ”

That’s just one indication of how far the show has come since starting out as a little-known Web series in 2009. For the uninitiated, Jacobson, 32, and Glazer, 28, play toked-up, fun house versions of their younger selves, romping through a madcap New York City, where the mundane indignities of urban life bleed hilariously into the absurd and where sitcom stereotypes of women don’t apply. They enjoy sex (key word: pegging—look it up), don’t hate their bodies (Glazer’s midriff is almost its own character), and save their greatest affection for each other (“I would follow you into hell, brother,” Jacobson promises Glazer, who responds, “I would take you on my shoulders”). “I think when the show first came out, it was almost like, ‘They’re like dudes, these girls,'” says Glazer, shaking her curls indignantly. “I mean, the binary’s ridiculous. Everyone’s on the spectrum.”

But if their make-believe world is a postgender one, the world in which they work is decidedly not. Glazer and Jacobson, Upright Citizens Brigade alums, met on an improvisation team where they were the only women. “Men persevere because they get the encouragement,” says Glazer; these two decided to give that support to each other. When they couldn’t get cast in other shows, they made their own, working nights and weekends to eventually put out the 34 Web episodes they dubbed Broad City. “We thought, We’re taking this seriously, even though there’s only, like, a thousand people watching,” Jacobson explains. But one of those people happened to be Parks and Recreation’s Amy Poehler (a fellow UCB alum), and in 2011 she agreed to executive- produce a TV pilot based on the series. “Before the show was picked up, we were living off, like, 20 grand a year,” Jacobson says. “But we thought, We’re doing it; we’ve got to make it work. I was catering my mom’s friends’ parties.” Glazer nods: “I was babysitting like a mother.”

Now the pair have signed on for a fourth and fifth season, sold a screenplay to 20th Century Fox, and are branching out to do separate, high-profile projects (for Glazer, Time Traveling Bong, a limited series premiering on Comedy Central April 20; for Jacobson, Carry This Book, a collection of illustrations, due out in October). Every step of the way, they’ve insisted on keeping creative control of their show. “Sometimes as women I feel we need to repeat ourselves to be heard,” says Glazer. “And it’s like, ‘OK, so I’ll repeat myself. And I’m going to say it f–king louder.’ It’s important that women create really funny content, from a feminist perspective but also just for the world.”

Which, in a roundabout way, leads to their life philosophy: “When in doubt, make something,” offers Jacobson. She urges her friend, “OK, you say yours.”

On cue, Glazer does: “The world is ending. Get pleasure.”
