The X-Men franchise has been around in one shape or another since director Bryan Singer’s first film in 2000. After the original trilogy concluded with X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, it was rebooted in 2011 with X-Men: First Class. Then, X-Men: Days of Future Past managed to bring the entire franchise together by resetting the timeline as it was established in the original trilogy, making way for new versions of fan-favorite characters.

As a result, X-Men: Apocalypse will introduce younger iterations of Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Ororo Munroe a.k.a. Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Kurt Wagner a.k.a. Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Now, a new clip from X-Men: Apocalypse shows how one of the young mutants develops their powers.

20th Century Fox released the clip from X-Men: Apocalypse (above), which shows Scott Summers in school, learning about the events that took place during Days of Future Past – roughly a decade prior. Both Erik Lensherr a.k.a. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) are focuses of the lesson, as the “world’s most wanted fugitive” and the “symbol of a new age,” respectively. However, Scott is distracted from the lesson as he develops his powers.

In X-Men: Apocalypse, Cyclops will be joining fellow new characters Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Archangel (Ben Hardy), Jubilee (Lana Condor), and the titular villain himself En Sabah Nur a.k.a. Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). Additionally returning X-Men characters include Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X (James McAvoy), Hank McCoy a.k.a. Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Peter Maximoff a.k.a. Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) – plus a “pivotal” appearance by Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).

As this clip suggests, it seems certain new characters in X-Men: Apocalypse like Cyclops will receive their own origin stories within the film. Of course, since Sheridan is signed on for more X-Men movies (likely in addition to other stars of the film), it makes perfect sense that he would receive plenty of focus in X-Men: Apocalypse. With the X-Men installment acting as the conclusion to the prequel trilogy, it seems to be passing the torch to the younger characters.

However, whether those origin stories prove to be woven into the film in a compelling manner remains to be seen. Early reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse indicate the conclusion of the prequel trilogy is overstuffed with too many characters, often with the new relationships and stories overshadowing those that would be concluding. But, as one reviewer indicated, the establishing origins of the newer characters in X-Men: Apocalypse could pave the way for more exciting X-Men films down the line – perhaps with Cyclops leading the team.

X-Men: Apocalypse will open in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017, and unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
