Lionsgate and CBS Films have set Michael Cuesta’s “American Assassin” for a September 15 release date. Based on Vince Flynn’s spy novel series, the film will star Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp, a CIA black ops recruit who undergoes deadly counter-terrorism missions. Michael Keaton will play Rapp’s instructor and Cold War veteran, Stan Hurley.

The film follows Mitch and Stan as they are assigned by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a series of seemingly unrelated attacks.

It turns out they are part of a plan by a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) who wants to start war in the Middle East. Together, the CIA operatives team up with a Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop the plot.

The film is written by Stephen Schiff and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler.

Along with “Assassin,” which is currently in postproduction, “Teen Wolf” alum O’Brien is also slated to appear in “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” which recently resumed filming after O’Brien sustained an injury on set that required hospitalization.

Keaton will next appear opposite Tom Holland in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” due out July 7.
