CBS is preparing to give fans twice as much Sheldon Cooper. The network officially picked up Young Sheldon, a prequel series for The Big Bang Theory. The new show has a straight-to-series order.
Young Sheldon stars Iain Armitage from HBOs’ Big Little Lies as a young Sheldon Cooper, growing up as a child genius in Texas. Zoe Perry will play his mother, which is appropriate since Perry’s real-life mother Laurie Metcalf currently plays Sheldon’s mom on The Big Bang Theory.
The order comes as CBS is still in negotiations to bring back The Big Bang Theory for next season. The network is clearly hoping that its top comedy will give a nice boost to Young Sheldon.
This is the first new series CBS has ordered for the 2017-2018 TV season. While CBS has only renewed one scripted series so far (NCIS), it has a healthy roster to choose from, especially when it comes to comedies. CBS had nine scripted half-hour comedies on its 2016-2017 schedule, including four freshman shows. It seems likely that many of them will be back, once again providing the network with enough content for two nights of two-hour comedy blocks.
Are you excited for Young Sheldon and the chance to possibly see the origin of “Bazinga”? The Big Bang Theory currently airs Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS.
