When it comes to iconic movie monsters, few approach the level of Godzilla. First introduced back in 1954, Godzilla has appeared in more than 30 films to date, when one includes both Japanese and American productions. Godzilla also holds the record for longest continually running franchise in movie history, with James Bond — which debuted in theaters in 1962 — being the only other real contender for that lofty distinction.

While Godzilla’s stateside output hasn’t always been the greatest, the appetite for new content from American Godzilla fans has never really abated, with each new Japanese offering eventually making its way across the pond. Oddly enough, though, one film medium Godzilla has yet to conquer is that of animation, which seems like it would be a natural fit for the big guy. This is evidenced by the fact that Godzilla has starred in multiple cartoon TV series over the years. Finally, though, Godzilla is gearing up to headline his very first animated theatrical film.

Simply titled Godzilla, the big G’s anime debut will naturally be produced and distributed by Toho, Godzilla’s home studio in Japan. Handling the actual animation for the film is Polygon Pictures, makers of dozens of anime films and TV shows over the past several decades. While Godzilla’s animated adventure has yet to be assigned a date for its Japanese theatrical release later this year, Netflix has just announced that it will bring the film to its subscribers worldwide, after the aforementioned theatrical run concludes.

Godzilla’s inaugural foray into anime films will be co-directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia), and written by Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass). The film’s voice cast includes Yuki Kaji (Attack on Titan), Takahiro Sakurai (AJIN: Demi-Human), Tomokazu Sugita (Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker), Junichi Suwabe (Prince of Tennis), Kana Hanazawa (BLAME!) and Mamoru Miyano (The Seven Deadly Sins).

Godzilla is currently experiencing quite the eventful period in his history, with last year’s effort Shin Godzilla recently winning the top prize at the Japanese version of the Oscars. Stateside, Godzilla is also preparing to square off with King Kong, as well as star in a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film. This second entry will be directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus). Fans can seemingly rest assured that the near future will include plenty of destruction, courtesy of one of cinema’s oldest titans.
